Dear Cornelius,

Your tag says your name is Cornelius, but we call you Mr. Giraffe or Giraffey. Hope you don't mind too much, because I don't see that changing anytime soon.

And let there be no doubt: you are Tommy's favorite toy. You beat out the other competition by about a million.

Tommy loves you. He loves you hard.

Your tail is your best feature, in Tommy's eyes. Me? I'm partial to your cute face and looooong limbs. But about that tail...I feel like I have to apologize that it ends up in Tommy's mouth so frequently.

As gross as your tail becomes, I have to admit that it's pretty cute how tightly he grabs onto it, though. With a viselike grip he clutches on, and it's hard to break his hold on that beloved tail when I'm trying to get him in his jammies.

I do what I can to keep you clean; I throw you in the washing machine as often as I can. I know this makes your sweet colors fade, but that saliva-smelling tail of yours makes it absolutely necessary.

You taught my boy to love, Mr. Giraffe. He was born an anti-snuggler, and although he's still not what one might consider a "cuddly baby," he sure is more loving and willing to be snuggled than he was before he met you. For that, I am grateful.

And, Mr. Giraffey, Tommy doesn't fall asleep very well without you. Bedtime is rotten on the dastardly occasions that we forget to take you along on overnight trips or longer visits at Grandma O's.

You put my boy at ease, and for that, I love you.

But not nearly as much as Tommy does.

"Stinker" is his middle name

We, as a family, have been tired lately.

Really. Dang. Tired.

Thomas has been working on several teeth for a handful of months, and he's not the friendliest teether. It makes him (off and on) a very cranky boy. Sometimes in the middle of the night. Sometimes several times a night.

Well hello, Thomas.

This, in turn, makes me (off and on) a cranky momma. Sometimes in the middle of the night. But usually in the morning. And my crankiness grows exponentially with every dang night of interrupted sleep.

Last Sunday was hard; Tommy squelched
and fought his desperately-needed nap.
He acted so rotten that I took him home after sacrament meeting
where he continued to fight sleep. UGH.

After sending a plea on Instagram for some ideas on how to help Tommy sleep better at night, I got some great tips and tricks. My friend Charley told me that her baby has been getting hungry during the night, so I tried feeding Tommy a few nights ago when he woke up just before 2:00; he pounded 6 oz. and fell back to sleep quickly. (In all truth, he woke up twice more, but not for long.) AND HE SLEPT UNTIL 7:03 AM!

That was Sunday night. We're still figuring stuff out, but a bottle in the middle of the night seems to be helpful. I woke up on my own Monday morning, guys. I woke up at 6:47, and I didn't feel exhausted. I'm praying pretty hard that this catches on.

Besides teething, Tommy is moving. All the time, he's moving. Crawling like a lizard. Climbing onto all the things (ALL THE THINGS!). Shoveling treats into his mouth. Getting into stuff he ought not get into. Pointing. Snuggling into our shoulders and biting our necks and shoulders like a tiny vampire. Watching our every move.  Dropping stuff from his highchair and watching intently to see if it might do something besides fall this time. Bonking his head on all sorts of things. Splashing and kicking and standing in the tub. Scampering away when his diaper is being changed or when we try to dress him. Knocking on things. Pounding things together.

He's also being pretty darned verbal. Squealing at the top of his lungs. Squelching when we eat something without offering him a bite. Imitating words. Shouting at us when he is displeased (for any number of reasons). Ignoring his parents when we tell him "no," or "stop."

This is a real fun age, is what I'm getting at.

Rocking on Gramma O's rocking chair
(not unlike Edith Ann)

He loves perching on his dad's neck,
oftentimes whacking his head like a bongo drum.

the past 5.5 months went like this

TOMMY: got croup during spring break; will not be sleep-trained or scheduled, thank you very much; army crawls very much like a lizard, and at lightning speed; is a wee small fellow, but loves to eat; likes to feed himself, except when it comes to bottles, sippy cups, and otter pops; hates teething, which makes Mom + Dad hate teething, too; loves Cheerios and will shovel them in his mouth by the fistful; teased his Momma by sleeping through the night for an entire month starting in May + has only given her a full night's rest a handful of times since; loves tub time + hates being diapered/dressed in equal measure; mimics sounds and gestures quite well; loves big kids and attention; is a sucker for flattery, especially when doled out by a female; loves swimming, and doesn't even mind cold-ish water; Grandpa O. just might be his favorite human; makes us tireder + happier than we've ever been.

ANDY: has been working on his photography in earnest; took us camping a few times + did most of the work of setting up and taking down by himself while Mom took care of Tom.

GINA: loved having the summer off to hang out with Tommy full-time; going back to work a few weeks ago may have been harder than going back after maternity leave; is equal parts exhausted from and delighted with motherhood.

And now, a million photos from the past several months...

I hope to be lots better at posting more often; this little squirt requires time and attention, but I want to document  his life on here better than I've been doing.
