my wonky thumbnail

Shortly after the new year began, I noticed a bump on my right thumbnail. At the very center, starting at the cuticle. It was kind of weird, and the bump started growing outward throughout the weeks.

It weirded me out a bit, if I'm being honest with you. Because I hadn't smashed my thumb or anything like unto it, y'know? I hadn't earned it.

Initially, I thought it was, perhaps, a thickening of the nail, so I grabbed a nail file, and I sanded it down.

That. Was. A giant mistake. And rather painful...

As it turns out, it wasn't a thickening of the middle part of my nail at all, but the bump came from underneath the nail itself. Ergo, I essentially filed my nail to almost skin-level down there by the cuticle. (If you don't understand how that feels, go ahead and try doing what I did. But really: DON'T TRY IT. Just take my word for it that it was painful, okay?)

Aaaanyway, I was hanging out with Jami one afternoon (when we were working on my dining room set) and I showed her my wonky nail, and she was kinda freaked out by it and encouraged me to go to the doctor about it.

So I did.

I sought medical help over my wonky thumbnail. And I sat in that doctor's office for the better part of 40 minutes while the PA poured of a medical book or two, trying to figure out what the what was going on with my right thumb.

My thumbnail problem was that weird, folks.

I took this picture a few days after visiting the doc.

When he figured out what it was, he came in to tell me about it.

It's called median nail dystrophy, folks, and there is no known cause. It only happens on the thumb nails, although sometimes it's bilateral. (Sooo grateful it's just my right thumb, I have to say.) Also, sometimes it happens on the big toenails. (Once again, I'm thrilled it skipped my toes altogether.) Starting at the cuticle, right in the middle, the nail either grows out with a bump, or else it starts splitting. And sometimes when it splits, it looks like a fir tree. There's no cure for it; it just grows out.

I was super bummed, because I'm vain when it comes to my nails, I suppose. I went home and googled "median nail dystrophy" and read up on it; in addition to what the PA said, I discovered that when it grows out, there's no exact time table. Sometimes it takes months. Sometimes it takes years.

Then I went ahead and looked at the google images of MND, and I felt sick and kind of depressed. Because the "thumb cracking to look like a fir tree" was simultaneously accurate and inaccurate. Some of those pictures were gross, and I kept thinking I'd have to cover my thumb with BandAids until the nastiness grew out, you know?

Also, I (maybe, a little bit) started praying, since my nails grow fast, that the wonk might not, in fact, last years.

Shortly after I visited the doctor, my nail started to crack.
It's lovely, isn't it?
More cracking.
This picture was titled "March 9"
And this one was titled "End of March"
On April Fools Day, it hit me that the wonk was, in fact, growing out!!
Mid-April...

I can't tell you how happy I am that this...median nail dystrophy...is leaving my body. THE WONK IS ALMOST GONE!

*I totally wasn't going to post anything about this, because YUCK. But now that it's almost gone (yay, hooray!), I'm less sensitive about it. And also: I kind of want to remember this, in case it ever comes back (heaven forbid!).

I hope that I haven't grossed any of you out too badly. I also hope that median nail dystrophy never graces any of your thumbs...

my flirt is broken...

Recently, it seems, I've had a handful of conversations about flirting. These conversations always make me a bit uncomfortable, because I'm not a good flirt. I never have been. Somehow, every time I flirt, it comes out all...awkward. Which is not a good thing. Not good at all.

I guess I'm not always horrible at it; it seems to come quite naturally (so I've been told) when I'm around really good guy friends, or if the guy I'm (accidentally) flirting at is, like, gay or something. So basically, I'm a decent flirt when the fella isn't a threat. (Is "threat" the right word, even?)

Anyway, I truly am no good at the flirting thang.

I'm good at being sincere, though. And giving compliments and stuff. I hope against hope that one day, my sincerity will catch the eye of a tall, handsome man. Right? Because, heaven knows I'm not going to capture a fella's heart (or positive attention) with my broken flirt.

Sad, but true.

I've had similar conversations with a couple of my guy friends, Jason and Cameron (collectively known as "Jameron"). Specifically, I remember chatting with Cameron in Hawaii about how I'm quite certain my signal is broken, or badly damaged, or the wiring's all screwed up...

Want to know what Cameron got me for Christmas?

It's a signal light thingy.
If only this did the trick...
(Obnoxious, but FUNNY!)

Anyway, I've heard a quote that "the way God made you is the way you're most beautiful,"(Russell M. Nelson), and although that's probably more about actual looks, I'm going to make it work for me and my broken flirt. Honestly, my not flirting is more attractive than my trying to flirt. Right?

There's gotta be hope for me, right? Sincerity's gotta be attractive to some fine fellow, right?

RIGHT?

shine...

Yesterday, it snowed. That's right, it was May 6th, AND IT SNOWED! So I live in SE North-of-Zion; snow happens whenever the heck it wants. It's not really a shock, but it's totally a bummer. (Every time it snows after about mid-March, it makes me weepy...)

But today? TODAY THE SUN WAS OUT! Oh, and it was glorious, is what!

Look at that baby shine!!!
(Fear not: I didn't look into the sun while taking this picture; just aimed the camera and click!)

Since I had the day off, I decided to take advantage of the sun; after doing a session at the Temple and running a few errands, I totally waxed my car. All by myself. Again. (This just seems to be my lot in life, it seems.)

This is me sans makeup.
(That's how you know I mean business!)

I got my dad to agree to help me wax my car last time I went home for a visit (a couple of weeks ago). Alas, it was raining that weekend. (Of course it was! Ugh!)

Anyway, I totally waxed my car. And although it takes me longer to wax my car than it takes you to wax yours, and it tuckers me right out, and also I'm certain that my lil biceps are bound to hurt on the morrow...I totally feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that I made my car look all shiny and slick. All by myself. (You're welcome, Gina!)

Look at that baby shine!!!

The real bummer is that I can guarantee some sort of storm (be it rain, hail, or snow) within the next 24-48 hours. It happens every time I wax my car, didn't you know? I can't think about that, though, or I get annoyed.

At least today was lovely...

Moving on...

Whilst beautifying my car, I totally wore shorts. To trick my legs into tanning. And you wanna know something neat?! My one pair of shorts...well, they actually fit! (I didn't even try 'em on last year, because I knew it'd make me feel pudgy, and who likes to feel pudgy? Do you?)

The One Pair of Shorts...
Are they even in style any more?
(Not that it'd stop me if they weren't...)
(All I ask is that you don't judge the alleged girth of my hips in this picture!
It's a weird angle, okay? Anybody's hips are bound to look massive from this angle!)

Anyways...my legs, they don't really like to tan. And they haven't seen the sun since last July at Huntington Beach.

Do you remember when this happened?
I do. OUCH!

on this day...

Today is May 5th. It never meant anything special to me, not until Spanish class in junior high when we had ourselves a fiesta. (You know, for Cinco de Mayo.)

Even then, it wasn't anything special.

But then, for a few years in a row, something significant happened on May 5th.

2003: My grampa passed away. (Sorry if you were expecting some happy news.) It really was a blessing, as he had been sick for a couple of years with kidney failure and the likes. But still...he was my grampa, and he passed away on 05.05.03.

Grampa served an LDS mission in Sweden, and he used to sing Swedish songs whenever the mood struck. I loved hearing him sing those Swedish songs; it always reminded me of the Swedish Chef. (Now, whenever I see the Swedish Chef, I think of Grampa.)

2004: I flew up north for an Alaskan Adventure. I had just received my BS degree a few days before, and I figured Alaska would be a dynamite place to spend the summer before I sold my soul to graduate school. 05.05.04 is the day my Alaskan Adventure began.

The Adventure wasn't anything like I thought it would be; I thought I'd make all sorts of money and spend my time in exotic surroundings. (Well, "exotic" for a girl born and raised in Utah.) Alas, my friend Jamie and I went to Denali; and, pretty as it is there, it reminded me of the Unitahs, except in Alaska the mountains are bigger and the trees are smaller.

Oh well, it was still quite lovely...

That there is Mt. McKinley...

2005: My brother Vance married my good friend Abby. Seriously, I couldn't have been happier about this union! Abby and I actually planned it that way when we were roommates for the summer of 2001. (Neither of us actually thought it would come true:)

I still tell myself that the real reason I went to Alaska is so Vance and Abby could fall in love without me being there in the middle of their relationship. Three cheers for 05.05.05!!!

2006: I was hooded. I had been through 2 years of a hellish nightmare called graduate school, and on 05.05.06, I was hooded a Master. (Yeah, that was a good day...)

Since 2006, I can't recall anything noteworthy happening on this day. 4 years in a row is kinda weird though, isn't it?
