A Pancake Story

I grew up disliking pancakes.

No, really.

I wouldn't say I hated them, but I'd rather have had just about anything else.

And the crazy part is that my parents always homemade them from scratch, never from a box. Isn't that spoiled of me? They'd make homemade pancakes, and I'd stick my nose in the air, pretty much refusing to eat them.

How bratty of me...

Sometimes, in all my snooty glory, I'd tell my parents, "I'll only eat them if we have Smucker's syrup." (You know...the berry kinds! Blueberry! Raspberry! Boysenberry! Strawberry! I love that Smucker's syrup!) My dad took the bait, so he'd try to make sure we had my syrupy demands in the refrigerator.

I had to share the syrup with my brothers--even though they liked pancakes fine with regular old maple syrup. And this truly annoyed me.

If the Smucker's was gone, I'd flat-out refuse the pancakes, made from scratch with love. I'd make myself a sandwich or something like unto it...

Lately, though?

Lately, I've been craving pancakes. When I went home for Christmas, I told my dear father, "Dad, I'm really in the mood for pancakes."

Do you know what he did?

He made me pancakes the very next morning for breakfast!

That's love.

And do you know what else? There was even Smucker's Boysenberry syrup in the fridge.

I love the Smuckers!

I think my dad loves me...

And really...I can't get pancakes off the brain.

I think I know what I'm having for lunch...

I would make fun of you, but I didn't love pancakes growing up either. now I could eat a baker's dozen in one sitting. some people call that "maturing" (or "gluttony," I forget which). oh, and I loves the maple syrup. fruit syrup is excellent for variety, but I do prefer Mrs. Butterworth over Smuckers.

Wow, not liking pancakes, that's like not liking...chocolate chip cookies. That syrup does look really good!

I too like going home because my dad also will make me anything I want when i get home. LOVE it. I liked pancakes growing up but always preferred French Toast or Waffles.

Gina. We are the same. Growing up, I'd always insist on waffles or french toast over pancakes ANY day, and my dad made them from scratch, too! (The pancakes.) We even had blackberries in our backyard so he would make blackberry syrup from scratch TOO, and...what did bratty DeeAura do? Nose. in. air.

I have, of course, mended my ways now, and every time I go home? Uhm..Dad? Pancakes? :)

i don't like pancakes either... but growing up we usually had wheat crepes or waffles instead. I never had any of the fancy syrup, that sounds good... and your dad can't help but cater to his only girl!

I still don't crave pancakes but I will eat a nice thinner buttermilk type.

GREAT. Now I want pancakes! I'm noticing a food theme on your blog lately. I'd say I'm never reading your blog at lunchtime again, but the turkey post seems to cure any appetite!

I often ask Vance on the weekends: Do you want pancakes? And he turns me down! I think it's the mess, but come to think of it, maybe it's because I make them from a box.

I love pancakes. Always have. My mom made them from scratch too. Almost every morning. Growing up I didn't think they were very special; in fact, I thought the days we had cold cereal were the most special. These days, I would love to wake up and have homemade pancakes made for me just like in the old days. =)

About those specialty, fruity syrups-- everyone loves them and they do sound yummy. Yet, whenever I try them, I'm disappointed and wished I had stuck with maple. I guess I'm just "regular" and "old." ;-)
