I seem to have struck a nerve with him, yes? (You forgot to mention shoes, brother.)
Aaron, you have just opened a can of worms, my friend, because this post is dedicated to literary men. Specifically, men penned by Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, and Elizabeth Gaskell.
I know they're not real, but these men (in the books and the movies) just make my heart flutter.

The Austen fellow I'm deeply smitten with is not Mr. Darcy (although he's kind of great). The Austen man who makes me swoon is Colonel Christopher Brandon from Sense & Sensibility. That's right, friends; Col. Brandon is my Mr. Darcy. HE IS SO WONDERFUL. He's sweet and caring, and he loves Marianne Dashwood SO MUCH. He's amazing in the book, and he's dynamite in the movie. (I might love him extra in the movie because he's portrayed by Alan Rickman--who, by the way, I think ought to be knighted. Sir Alan Rickman has a nice ring to it. He's a terrific actor, and I could listen to him talk all the livelong day. Oh, that voice!) Ah, and in the movie Sense & Sensibility, my favorite scene is when Marianne is singing at Sir Middleton's house, and Col. Brandon walks in late...but in that scene, YOU WATCH HIM FALL IN LOVE with Marianne! Oh my goodness, it's ridiculously precious. (I rewind it a few times every single time I watch it. Maybe.)

Then there's Mr. John Thornton from Elizabeth Gaskell's North & South. I watched the movie after I'd read a few chapters of the book. (He seems a lot harsher in the movie than in the book, but I can't help but love him throughout the movie, and I'm not going to lie, it probably has something to do with the fact that he's portrayed by the beautiful and talented Richard Armitage.) The book takes a while to get through because there's a glossary full of French words, but it's a wonderful book.

Ms. Brontë's man of character is, of course, Mr. Edward Rochester. He's a tortured soul, but he's got a story worth reading, and he loves Jane Eyre so much! I've read Jane Eyre only once (need to remedy that, actually), and I've only ever seen the brand new version of the movie portrayed by one Michael Fassbender--which was enough to make me a little weak at the knees. I watched it (for the first time) with Beth, Bethany, Keri, and Lindsey; it was that same night I found out there's a Broadway musical of Jane Austen. Do you want to know whose voice melts my heart into a soupy puddle? It's Mr. Rochester! Gah, I love him...

Now don't go thinking that I have unreal expectations about my future husband; I know these men are fictitious, and I don't really LOVE-love them. I just recognize amazing characters in books when I read them. (Take, for example, Severus Snape; he was my favorite Harry Potter character from the very beginning. So complex, and a total hero!)
Obviously, I'd take a real living, breathing man over the fictitious ones any day.
Just waiting to find him...

Mr Knightly from Emma is MY Mr. Darcy. That is how I expect to fall in love. And he too just loves her.
I think I nodded off a couple of times reading this. Clearly, I am not a Jane Austen man. Which is to say, I'm not gay. But I do love Alan Rickman (in an entirely acceptable, platonic way, of course).
maybe set your sights more realistic - Peter Griffin? ;-p
When I made my sister Mandi her clock of men I had SUCH a GOOD TIME!!! I love finding the best picture of 16 different male characters throughout British Literature. After I made the clock the pics were on my computer and Vance said "Do we have to keep seeing these British Actors pop up on our screen saver?" And for some reason, it was REALLY hard to delete. But WHY? if I'm married it shouldn't be a big deal. But I think now reading your post I know why. These male characters have some traits that are 100% perfected (in literature form) and not that my husband doesn't have some amazing qualities... it's nice recognizing perfection in a fictitious world. Am I justified yet in my thinking? Thanks by the way, I really enjoyed reading this post.
oh my goodness i adore this post. i whole-heartedly agree with everything you said about these 3. and now i think i'll go watch me some sense and sensibility
I love Jane Austen. Love everything she writes.
Your post gave me the chills! Especially when you wrote about how when Col. Brandon walked in the room and you watch him fall in love with Marianne. I also love that movie. These are some wonderful movies/books. Makes me want to go have a Jane Austin movie marathon. You game? ;)

I love Mr. Darcy best. It's probably because he was my first Austen hero to fall in love with. I have to confess I don't really remember Sense and Sensibility. I never read the book and it's been a long time since I've seen the movie. I should really do something about it.
Tragically, I've never read nor seen North & South. Also, something I should change.
I do LOVE Mr. Rochester. Jane Eyre is one of my favorites.
Like Brandi, I'd love to have a movie marathon sometime and at least see North and South. I feel like I've missed out on something awesome. :)
My Jane Austun man would probably be Mr. Darcy, although I do need to watch Sense and Sensibility again. I agree with what you said about Alan Rickman; he also makes a really good bad guy. Now if I had to make a choice between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Rochester? I don't know if I could.
If the new version of Jane Eyre is the only one you've seen, have I got a treat for you. Masterpiece Theater did a 4 hour version starring Toby Stephens which I love, love love! Ask Abby if you ever want to borrow it as I would be happy to lend it out.
I just saw North & South for the first time...and now I believe you have a "type", at least of the fictional man kind: you like the brooding men. Brooding, pensive, somewhat underspoken. (Yes, I just made up a word). Enter the strong silent type. If I ever meet any that are still single, I'll totally shoot them your way.
